Aug., 23 2004.-The FDA Approves the Titanium Rib Project, a Co-Invention of the African-American Pediatric  Surgeon, Dr. Melvin D. Smith. (Below, the device VEPTR )

Dr. Smith, a pediatric surgeon, and Dr. Robert Campbell, a pediatric orthopedic surgeon,  have worked together since 1987 to perform corrective procedures in kids born with unstable chest, using their device known as the vertical  expandable prosthetic titanium rib (VEPTR).  Pictured: right, Dr. Robert Campbell; left, Dr. Melvin Smith.  Both have performed 200 operations in San Antonio and more than 300 worldwide to correct in kids these rare anomalies of the rib cage and the vertebral column that could lead to abnormal lung growth.   • Charles O. Dillard, MD (pictured below, on the left and standing) from Cincinnati, accepting an award "Glorifying the Lions" from the African-American Leadership Development Program during this year 54th annual meeting of the Urban League of Greater Cincinnati at the Hyatt Regency. Dr. Dillard, an internist in private practice and a retired brigadier-general of the Ohio National Guard, received the award for his outstanding work in his community and overseas.
