Do you have any information about young black men who have been diagnosed with Focal Glomerulosclerosis? Any information would be greatly appreciated as my son who is 18 will be having a kidney biopsey to see if he has this. Thank you Our Answer: Thank you for your question related to focal glomerulosclerosis. The biopsy that your son is going to have should tell if he has focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) found in 15-20% of adults with idiopathic nephrotic syndrome (nephrotic syndrome of unknown origin). Yes, FSGS is especially common in blacks with idiopathic nephrotic syndrome . The histologic diagnosis (from the biopsy) may be either idiopathic (unknown) or secondary to a number of different causes such as sickle cell disease, HIV, obesity, heroin abuse, reflux of urine from the bladder to the kidneys, and lesions associated with single or remnant (residual) kidneys. The treatment varies somewhat from one kidney specialist to the other. More details can be found if you go to Search in our site on Homepage or General Health page. The Search box will connect you with Medline. Best wishes for your son Dr. Carl Gilbert
