in African Americans:
- Approximately 2.3 million African Americans have
diabetes.
- About one-third of these 2.3 millions African Americans
are not aware they have diabetes.
- For every 6 whites with diabetes, 10 African American
have the disease.
- Diabetes is especially common among middle-aged and older
adults and among black women.
- When compared to whites with diabetes, African Americans
with the disease are:
1) More likely to develop heart disease.
2) 1.5 to 2.5 times more likely to suffer from peripheral vascular
diseases leading to lower limbs amputation.
3) Two times more likely to develop blindness.
4) 2.6 to 5.6 times more likely to develop kidney diseases.
5) More likely to die from diabetes and diabetes-related illnesses.

A new survey finds that most Americans believe diabetes is a
major health problem, but not for them. Seventy-one percent of adults polled in
a telephone survey said diabetes is a serious problem in the USA, but most have
never discussed it with a physician, nor are they concerned about developing the
