Subject: How do I find a female black doctor

I am a black female, age 46, in Savannah, Ga.  I have been to several gynecologists and just don't feel comfortable with them. I feel they don't respect or consider me as a patient as seriously or caringly as they do their white patients.
Are there any black doctors, specifically female doctors, in the southeastern part of Georgia?  I have had no luck on the web locating a list of black doctors.
I have a very large fibroid in my uterus. The last doctor that I went to says that it is the size of a 7 month pregnancy. I have had severe anemia in the past but didn't know that this was the possible cause until I started hunting around on the internet for information about my condition.
Both of the white, male, gynecologists that I have visited recommended surgery. One even told me that I shouldn't even bother getting another opinion and recommended a radical hysterectomy with a very brief examination.  I went to a second doctor who recommended the same with the exception that he said that I could keep my ovaries.
If you can give me any information about black physicians in this field, in my area, I would be tremendously grateful.

Allabh Response:

Dear Site Visitor:

We thank you for your inquiry.  As how to find a black female gynecologist, we suggest that you call the toll free number of the NMA (national association of the black doctors).  The number can be found on our site www.allaboutblackhealth located on the Physician Locator page  (Click on Black Physicians on the home page). If  your search is not successful and you still strongly desire to be seen by a female black gynecologist, you might want to go to a city nearby to take care of the problem.
Good Luck

Dr. Carl Gilbert

Note:  We have had many requests for black physicians from site visitors throughout the U.S..  We have always referred those requests to the Physician Locator of All About Black Health or to the toll free number mentioned above -1-888-662-7497- unless we know of specific physicians in a specific location.

Comments/Questions:

Where can I get more info on the history of black physicians in the
United States???

Allabh Response:

Dear Site Visitor:

Thank you for your question regarding black physicians in the US.

First, on www.Allaboutblackhealth.com there is an article written by Dr. Esly Caldwell, which gave us an overview of the history of black physicians in the US.  You can find the article (titled Black Physicians Revisited) by getting to the 'General Health' Page or click on www.allaboutblackhealth.com/historyofblackphysicians.htm
Second, by going to www.cincinnatimedicalassociation.org, you'll find another article written by two Cincinnati physicians, which gives a historical perspective of black physicians in that region.

Dr. Caldwell's e-mail is caldwel5@zoomtown.com
He should be able and willing to help you more with what you're looking for.

Good Luck
Dr. CG
