The Summer Trend Endangering Our Children!  ©

by Lena Sanchez

Warm months seem to bring out all those sweet myriad of colored drinks and tempting snack foods, for kids, loaded with killer additives.

Caffeine and food additives are addictive killer drugs found in the attractive soft drinks, cereals, punches, Kool-Aid and even over-the-counter and prescription drugs. These dangerous, but socially accepted chemicals cause many problems within the child's body. When consumed they put those little body organs into a state of constant of confusion.

Hot weather finds cases and six packs of bottles and cans of sodas along with huge amounts of snack foods in grocery baskets of moms everywhere, which contain additives, artificial colors and caffeine! These are the same moms who will cry WHY, when her child becomes ill!

The average overall, adult and children, consumption of artificial food coloring and flavors is 327.6 mg. Yet the testing is done at a level of 27.0gms, so do we even know the full extent of what will happen down the road?

Since artificial food coloring is usually made from Petroleum, you might as well give them a glass of gas or oil.

If it's spelled with "butyl" you can bet it's petroleum! The most popular additives in foods and drink are BHA (Butylated hydroxyanisole ) & BHT (butylated hydroxyanisole). One-eighth mg of BHA & BHT fed to mice turned them into fighting, hyper, ill mice.

Artificial colors and additives are found in processed foods such as; cereals, cakes, cookies, ice cream, juice drinks, soda's, chewing gum and more. Listed chemicals are, Alginates, Lecithin, Mono-& Diglycerides, Methyl Cellulose, Carrageenan, Glycerine, Guar Gum, Fumaric Acid and Sodium Aluminosilicate.

Food dyes and artificial additives are just as dangerous as Caffeine, but you never really hear about them! It's the chemical worlds secret and they want it to stay that way.

All artificial colors and food additives are proven to be connected to a world of illnesses, not to mention they kill the immune system at 27.0 gms. So what's really happening, at the average intake, is anybody's guess.

Put the average daily consumption of drinks, cereals and fast foods, per person, containing colorings and artificial flavorings together and we are looking at a world of children with ADD, ADHD, Autism, Asthma along with a load of other neurological problems!

While another common additive "caffeine" will temporarily stimulate and arouse the intellect and put a temporary damper on fatigue, it is short-lived. The excess stimulation depletes the body of vital energy as it struggles to deal with these poisons, which has entered its system. This additive seems to be included just for getting you addicted to whatever it is added to. Contains no nutrient value what-so-ever!

A drop of caffeine on the head of a pin kills a mouse.

Foods with caffeine, artificial colors and flavorings artificially stimulate the brain creating interruptions and increase the heart rate.

Studies have shown that the consumption of caffeine produces increased incidence of bladder and stomach cancer, raised blood pressure, increased heart rate, and aggravates diabetes while damaging the lining of the stomach. Caffeine contributes to and/or causes birth defects in children and causes at least six kinds of cancer.

In 2003 some schools banned additive and caffeine containing vending machines, but not sufficient numbers to make a huge difference! And it may be too little too late for those children who have been raised on all these colors, additives and caffeinated foods and drink!

One ounce of chocolate has 35 mg caffeine. They are not required to tell us how much coloring or artificial flavors are used, but you can bet they are many!

Colas range between 34 and 49 mg. caffeine per 12 ounces. Mountain Dew topped out at 49 mg. per 12 ounces, while the lowest was Diet Pepsi and Pepsi Light at 34 mg. Coca-Cola has 42 mg. Regular Pepsi-Cola has 35 mg. Store brands are not usually tested as to their amounts of caffeine is anybody's guess!

Sodas contain the artificial colorings, Amaranth (red), Bordeaux (brown) Orange I (yellow) and Ponceau (scarlet) dyes, all of which are unfit for human consumption. Again they will not tell us how much the drinks contain!

Sugar-free (aspartame) ingredients, used in diet drinks and sugar free foods, have been shown to cause MS and other neurological problems.

In his book, Water Can Undermine Your Health, Dr. N. W. Walker writes, “Supposing you knew that Soft Drinks could cause your brain to disintegrate, would you drink them? More than a million children today are afflicted with cerebral lesions (injury to the brain that causes sudden discharge of excessive nervous energy) and other afflictions caused by Soft Drinks!”

"Soft drinks have much in common with hard liquor, claimed the co-discoverer of insulin," Dr. Charles Best. "Cirrhosis of the liver has been found among teenagers who drink large quantities of soft drinks, as well as among chronic alcoholics.” In a report found in the FDA Consumer, October 1980, “Most soft drinks, including the cola and pepper-type drinks contain caffeine and are the number one beverage in the United States today, with coffee second. Caffeine is a drug, which stimulates the central nervous system. In the amounts presently being consumed, it can cause insomnia, nervousness, irritability, anxiety and disturbances in the heart rate and rhythm.”

Since 1980 a lot more has been proven and none of it good! Actually worse than Dr. Best had thought!

Dr. Mary Ruth Swope wrote, “Why I Don’t Drink Soft Drinks and I Wish You Didn’t,” making the following statement: “Cola drinks contain caramel coloring, which, according to some researchers, has genetic effects and is a cancer-causing suspect. olyethylene glycol is used as an ingredient sometimes."

Glycol is used in anti-freeze in automobiles and as an oil solvent. Perhaps you have noticed that pouring cola drinks on your windshield in a snow or ice storm will keep the windshield from freezing over with ice and removes tarnish and grime form stainless steel.

A government warning was once issued to the manufacturer of a certain world-famous refreshing soft drink for its suspected effect on the bones of children because of the large amount of phosphoric acid in it. No forthcoming penalty was given and the practice continues!

Dr. George M. Halpern, Division of Allergy at the University of California Davis School of Medicine, reports that diet soft drinks may cause allergies. “The potential problem may be due to toxicity because of the increase in consumption of diet drinks. Acute or chronic hives may be symptoms caused by this low-calorie, artificial sweetener.”

In her 1971 book, “Consumer Beware,” Beatrice Hunter writes, “Dr. Clive McCay, working at the Naval Research Institute, placed extracted human teeth in cola drinks. Within two days, the teeth became very soft, and the enamel surface lost much of its calcium. Rats, well fed but given nothing to drink except cola beverages, after six months had their molar teeth dissolved down to the gum line. When Dr. McCay reported years ago that the rat experiments before the Delaney hearings on chemicals in foods, a lawmaker reminded him that the soft drink industry represented huge economic investments. He suggested that these alarming findings be soft-pedaled to avoid disrupting the industry and the economy as a whole. So do not expect government to help with this gross problem…

The research is abundant and the case is very clear; Colas, soft drinks and food additives are detrimental to all of God’s children no matter what their age and should be eliminated from the diet immediately.

You and your family are daily exposed to countless advertisements, commercials and “so-called scientific” studies designed to promote meat, dairy products, sugar, white flour and other processed foods, as well as drugs such as coffee, sodas, candy, cereals, cigarettes, alcohol, etc. Carefully consider your choices as you plan the summer outings for yourself and your family! Replace those fast food snacks and drinks with frozen grapes, frozen bananas, healthy fresh fruit juice and plain ole filtered water!

Exercise may curb blood pressure risk in blacks

NEW YORK, Feb 21 (Reuters Health) - A lack of enough exercise may account for some--but not all--of the greater propensity for black Americans to develop high blood pressure compared with those from other ethnic backgrounds.

Overall, people who exercise moderately to vigorously at least five times a week are 25% less likely to have high blood pressure, or hypertension, than their peers who get no exercise, according to a report in the February issue of Preventive Medicine.

However, while black Americans seem to be more likely to be sedentary, with 32% of black respondents reporting no physical activity in a week compared with 18% of non-Hispanic white Americans, blacks who did report exercising still had a higher likelihood of developing hypertension than whites who exercised an equivalent amount, the report indicates.

This suggests there may be additional risk factors other than a lack of exercise for the high rates of high blood pressure among black Americans. For example, some researchers have suggested that black Americans could have a lessened ability to properly excrete salt, which can lead to hypertension, said study co-author Dr. David R. Bassett, Jr., a professor in the department of exercise science and sport management at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville.

"Even after we adjusted for different levels of physical activity, blacks had a greater level of hypertension," Bassett told Reuters Health. "So at any level of physical activity, blacks were more likely to have hypertension than whites."

In the study, Bassett and colleagues analyzed data taken from more than 12,000 Americans who participated in the third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.

Overall, 31% of non-Hispanic blacks, 21% of Mexican Americans and 21% of non-Hispanic whites had hypertension. Hypertension was defined as having a systolic blood pressure of 140 mm Hg or greater (the first number in a blood pressure reading), or a diastolic blood pressure of 90 mm Hg or greater (the second number in a reading), or taking hypertensive medications.

One limitation to the study is that because the study design did not allow the researchers to assess physical activity obtained on the job, they may have underestimated physical activity in black study participants, Bassett noted.

Still, combining this study with the findings of other research suggests that physical activity can lower the risk of hypertension across all ethnic groups.

"The take-home message is that regular physical activity does appear to be associated with a lower prevalence of hypertension," Bassett said. "Blacks would still be at higher risk (of hypertension) than whites who exercise the equivalent amount, but they would have a lower risk than blacks who are sedentary."

Blacks watch more TV than any other groups

by Marie Love Darbouze

It is a proven fact that a sedentary lifestyle or lack of exercise cause diseases such as heart attacks, high blood pressure, obesity and diabetes.  It is also a fact that African Americans are more likely to suffer from those ailments than any other racial groups in the United States. Yet, blacks continue to adopt a lifestyle that is conducive to those diseases.

According to Initiative Media, a network advertising buyer, blacks watch 73.6 hours of TV a week, about 17 hours more than Latinos, and 22 hours more than nonblacks (whites and Asians). Regardless of the time of day, African-American viewership is significantly higher. For example, during overnight hours, blacks averaged 10.3 hours a week, compared to 4.1 hours for nonblacks and 3.7 hours for Latinos.

Take obesity for example, it is linked to an increasing rate of diabetes in the United States, and doctors say the higher incidence of the disease is due in large part to America's weight problem.  Experts blame several factors - hundreds of TV channels, stressful jobs that lead people to gulp down fatty fast food, the rise of computers at home and at work, even a construction boom that has gobbled up space for outdoor exercise.

When a segment of the African-American populations watch 73.6 hours of TV a week, the black community must be very concerned with this kind of unhealthy lifestyle.

Because of lack of minority representation among TV performers, creators, and executives, NAACP has tossed around the idea of boycotting the four major networks.

Would it be killing two birds with one stone – this unhealthy lifestyle, and the lack of minority TV representation?
